Phaselis Ancient City is an ancient port city located near the district of Kemer in Antalya province, in southwestern Turkey. Its history dates back to the 7th century BC, and it was an important trade and cultural center during the Lycian, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

Foundation and Lycian Period

Phaselis was founded by Rhodian colonists in the 7th century BC. Due to its strategic location, the city quickly became an important port and trade center. Included in the Lycian League, Phaselis became one of the most significant cities on the eastern coast of Lycia.

Persian and Hellenistic Period

In the 5th century BC, Phaselis came under the control of the Persian Empire and was later conquered by Alexander the Great. After the death of Alexander, the city came under the control of the Ptolemies, the Seleucids, and Rhodes in turn.

Roman and Byzantine Period

In the 2nd century BC, Phaselis came under the dominance of the Roman Empire and developed significantly during this period. Due to its location on important trade routes of the Roman Empire, the city became economically prosperous. Phaselis maintained its importance during the Byzantine period and became a religious and cultural center during this era.

Middle Ages and Later

After the Byzantine period, the city began to decline due to Arab raids and pirate attacks. Phaselis was completely abandoned in the 11th century, eventually forgotten over time and largely destroyed by natural effects.

Today, Phaselis is an important archaeological site and tourist attraction. The ruins of structures such as the ancient theater, agoras, baths, and aqueducts await visitors. It is also famous for its beautiful beaches and natural beauty.

Phaselis is considered one of Turkey's important ancient cities with its historical and cultural richness and is visited by thousands of tourists every year.
