Hierapolis is an ancient city and archaeological site located adjacent to Pamukkale. This ancient city was founded in the 2nd century BC during the Phrygian period. However, its most glorious era was experienced under the rule of the Roman Empire.
Hierapolis was renowned as an important thermal city during the Roman period. The city thrived due to the thermal springs in its vicinity and became particularly famous for spa and health tourism. According to ancient sources, it was believed that Hierapolis' thermal waters possessed healing properties, attracting many visitors seeking health benefits.

Furthermore, Hierapolis served as a significant center for culture and education. The city boasted a grand theater, temples, baths, colonnaded streets, and other ancient structures. Additionally, Hierapolis is home to one of the largest necropolis areas, containing thousands of tombs constructed in various architectural styles across different periods.

Hierapolis began to decline in significance during the 7th century AD due to earthquakes and abandonment. Nevertheless, the ancient city has preserved many of its historical artifacts and remains an important archaeological site for visitors.

In 1988, Hierapolis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Today, it is open to visitors as a tourist destination. Visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient city, the theater, thermal pools, necropolis, and other historical structures, thereby experiencing the rich history and cultural heritage of Hierapolis.
